Mountain Lodges of Peru
Four upscale lodges make for a fabulous lodge-to-lodge trek to Machu Picchu along the Salkantay route, a longer alternative to the Inca Trail. All the accommodations are located in wonderfully pristine locations, with the irresistible charm of Machu Picchu as the final destination. A hot tub is a fabulous way to soothe tired muscles after a day’s hiking, as are the massages on offer. The views throughout are spectacular and the trek takes in 15 ecosystems in a 6 day adventure.
In 2006 Mountain Lodges of Peru sponsored the creation of an NGO named Yanapana Peru. Yanapana Peru has set two important goals for its first stage of development: to elevate the level of education for more than 150 families in the area and to give an incentive to the local population to take an active role in the development of tourism in the area.
One of the most famous sites in the world, the lost city of the Incas draws tourists from all over the world. A four-hour train journey from Cusco (or a stiff trek), there are 12 acres of terraces, staircases and temples to explore. See the Temple of the Sun and Intihuatana, one of the holiest spots in Inca history.
