Trip Highlights

Your ''Taste of Volunteering'' Project

World Heritage Building Restoration
Ghadhames Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Play your part in ensuring the preservation of this ancient oasis town. Help with plastering, painting, and other general restoration work, including in the stunning mosque.

Trip Summary

After being met by your Hands Up Holidays representative at Tripoli airport, you are transferred to your hotel. Before your welcome dinner you should get the chance to have your first exploration of the souks (markets).

In the morning you visit Leptis Magna – the best preserved Roman ruins in the world, and spend time in the afternoon learning about Libyan culture and gaining insights to Islam.
The following morning you leave early, with the Roman port town of Sabratha your first stop. After a thorough exploration you head inland, stopping in ancient Nalut town to see its curious weathered buildings, before finishing up in Ghadhames.

Ghadhames Old Town is a wonderful maze of alleyways, and it is here that your volunteer work takes place on this UNESCO World Heritage site. If you desire you can focus on the mosque, and deepen your understanding of this frequently misunderstood religion. However, before you commence your volunteering, you spend an afternoon and evening on a 4WD outing in the Rumla desert. Of course a trip to the desert would not be complete without a brief ride on a camel!

After this incredible experience volunteering, you must bid farewell to your new friends as you head further south, and the magical Ubari Sand Sea with its stunning oases fringed with palm trees.

Another highlight is your two day camping trip into the Sahara Desert around the Akakus Mountains, with their alien rock formations and prehistoric cave paintings.

You then fly back to Tripoli to have a relaxing day at a beach resort. The final morning in Tripoli is spent at the National Museum and in the souks, for some last minute shopping.
