Your ''Taste of Volunteering'' Project
Repairs & Renovations
The volunteering will be on the outskirts of Lilongwe, with Somebody Cares, a charity which began as a response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Malawi. You will help build washing-up facilities for children and thus help to reduce the spread of disease from poor hygeine.
Somebody Cares works alongside churches and communities in Malawi, aiming to prevent, mitigate and alleviate the impact of HIV/AIDS in Malawi. This is done by positively affecting and impacting individual lives in homes, schools and communities. The core service of the organisation is towards widows, orphans and vulnerable children. 46% of Malawi's population is under the age of fifteen. Somebody Cares works with thirty-three villages around Lilongwe.
Trip Summary
Upon arrival in Lilongwe, you will be transferred to Kiboko camp where you will stay in a simple chalet (beddings and mosquito nets are provided). After a tour of Lilongwe town the next day and a cultural introduction, you are then ready to start your volunteer project with Somebody Cares, an HIV/AIDS charity.
After four amazing days of building the bathroom washing-up facilities and getting to know these wonderful people, we head into Zambia! We camp by the Luangwa River, watching elephants cross at dusk and listening to the sounds of the great outdoors. Relax over a drink before retiring for the evening.
For the next two days, after early breakfast you have a morning game drive, with our guide searching for elephants, zebra’s, giraffes, lion, leopard and much more. Enjoy the sights of the Park before returning to camp for a well needed brunch. Take a refreshing swim in the pool before entering the park once again. After a snack we join the afternoon game drive/ night drive. This is a unique way to view the nocturnal activity of the park. Dinner will be served at the camp. We then depart for Chipata, stopping en route at Tribal Textiles Workshop to see the beautiful fabrics made by the local craftsmen and artists.
Livingstone is our next stop, and after a days driving we pitch tent along the mighty Zambezi River. Listen to the sound of the almighty Mosi-oa-Tunya (“The smoke that thunders”), also known as Victoria Falls in the background before falling asleep. We spend two days around the mighty Victoria Falls. The Falls are over a mile in length and over 5 million litres of water per second can flow over the falls during the rainy season. You can choose to do some of the optional activities like a canoe safari on the upper Zambezi, a flight in an airplane, helicopter, micro light or balloon over the Falls, white water rafting and the famous 111-meter bungee jump above the Zambezi River. The sunset cruise is a perfect way to end these days, drifting past hippo’s and elephants as the sun sets over the mighty Zambezi River.
We spend the next two days driving over the rolling hills through fascinating African landscapes, returning to Lilongwe, Malawi in the late afternoon of Day 15, when your adventure ends.
