Your "Taste" of Volunteering Project
Even here in the island paradise of Fiji, life is not always easy for the locals, but you have the opportunity to improve the lives of two very vulnerable populations at two amazing projects.
The first project is a heart warming experience at a project that supports single mothers and their children. It provides the mothers with emotional and material support so that they can raise their children in a safe environment, so they can grow up to be well adjusted and happy adults.
Here you may help teach (a Christian curriculum), or assist in the bakery and in various building or gardening projects. These projects include, building detached homes for mothers who are transitioning to independent living. Additionally, there are hiking trails to be cleared to create eco-tourism opportunities in the stunning grounds.
The second project is an orphanage for boys, which aims to instill the children, some of which have suffered some horrendous abuses, with the independence, confidence and character traits they need for normal life – and to be successful members of the community. That way they can one day have a family of their own and understand how normal families should behave.
On this project you will help with repair and renovation work, as well as relieving the daily burden of the permanent care-givers, with cleaning, washing, and meal preparation, thus freeing them up to focus on caring for the children. There are also opportunities to help with teaching or as a reading partner for the children when they come back from school.
If you have teaching or building skills, the single mothers project may be better for you, whilst landscaping, mechanical, electrical or plumbing skills, may be more important at the boys orphanage. As with most projects it all depends on what is needed at the time.
Trip Summary
This trip combines the warmth of the Fijian people with one of two rewarding volunteer projects. You will treasure your time here, as you get to know the wonderful inhabitants of these islands!
