Your "Taste of Volunteering" Project
World Heritage Building Restoration
Ghadames Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can play your part to preserve this ancient oasis town, helping with plastering, painting, and other general restoration work, including inside the stunning mosque. You can help alongside local people, and also enhance your understanding of the Islamic faith and Libyan culture.
Trip Summary
You are met by your Hands Up Holidays representative at Tripoli airport and transferred to your hotel. There should be plenty of time to explore the souks (markets) before your welcome dinner.
The next morning is your chance to visit Leptis Magna; marvel at the best preserved Roman ruins in the world. In the afternoon learn about Libyan culture and gain some insights to Islam.
The following morning you leave early, with the Roman port town of Sabratha your first stop. After a thorough exploration you leave the coast and make for the ancient town of Nalut with its dusty streets and curious buildings. Before the day is out you make your way to the gem of the trip, the UNESCO world heritage town of Ghadames.
Ghadames Old Town is a wonderful maze of alleyways, and it is here that your volunteer work takes place. There are many restorative tasks to be carried out and if you desire you can focus you energies on the mosque, and deepen your understanding of this frequently misunderstood religion. However, before you commence your volunteering, you spend an afternoon and evening on a 4WD outing in the Rumla desert. Of course a trip to the desert would not be complete without a brief ride on a camel!
After this incredible experience volunteering, you must bid farewell to your new friends as you drive back to Tripoli. The scenic drive is a great opportunity to reflect on your brief but fulfilling experience. The final morning in Tripoli is spent at the National Museum and visiting the souks, for some last minute shopping.
