This formerly sleepy port town is now an elegant hub of artists, water sports enthusiasts and day trippers. It’s quite the chic resort, and with a history dating back to the 7th century, it’s not short on enchantment. The port itself is a must see, and hammams such as Lalla Mira are among the best in the country.
Accommodation in Essaouira
This 18th century riad is located between the medina and the beach, with stone pillars and superbly sculpted wood. The 12 rooms are exceptional, some of them with romantic views over the Bay of Essaouira. You can also enjoy the same views from the relaxing terrace, which has its own solarium.
The romance of staying in a building that dates back to the 14th century is hard to ignore. Now a sophisticated ‘maison d’hotes’, you’re surrounded by Moroccan antiquities to ramp up the historic atmosphere. The big draw is the restaurant, arguably the city’s best, and a destination in its own right.
