Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake in Kenya, outside the town of Naivasha in Nakuru County, which lies north west of Nairobi. It is part of the Great Rift Valley. The name derives from the local Maasai name Nai'posha, meaning "rough water" because of the sudden storms which can arise. Hugged by grassy banks and lined with cacti and sand olive trees, the lake is a gorgeous site. Stand on one side of it and you won't see the other; only clouds of water birds and the pinkened ears of hippos, peeking like submarine periscopes above the surface. But there's more to this spot than the lake. You can go horse riding among giraffes and zebra, and relax in the garden at Elsamere, the former home of late Born Free legend Joy Adamson.
