China is a huge country and covers a large range of climatic conditions, so the best time to visit depends on where you want to go, but as a rule of thumb:
Best time: Fall (Autumn)
Normally, the most comfortable season of the year is early fall (September to early October). During this time, temperatures are moderate throughout China (about 50-72F) with a limited amount of rain.
Also best: Spring
Spring can also be delightful with the average temperatures roughly the same as in fall (about 50-72F). The best way to deal with weather unpredictability is to wear layered clothing.
Summer (from June to the end of August) can be extremely hot with temperatures well above 72F, especially in the famous ‘four furnaces’ of China: Wuhan, Tianjin, Chongqing and Nanchang.
Summer is also a rainy season in much of China, so you should bring an umbrella or raincoat.
Low season: Winter
Winter can be incredibly cold especially in the north. However, this can also reward you. For example, the Harbin Winter Ice Lantern Festival is charming.
