Banyan Tree Lang Co
This hideaway is positioned for sunrises that are reflected in the East Sea and the villa’s private pool.
This resort is in a top-notch seaside position in central Vietnam, with the gateway city of Da Nang about an hour away by road. Also within striking distance are World Heritage sites, including charming Hoi An, and the former Imperial Capital of Hue.
There is no such thing as a badly located room here – accommodation is in 49 pool villas, with a choice of lagoon-view or beachfront categories. The waves provide a rhythmic soundtrack on otherwise still nights. There are plenty of localised touches at Lang Co, from the colored lanterns that swing over the lagoon to the Vietnamese lacquered screens above the beds and distinctive handwoven textiles and silken embroideries. Look for bronze drums, sandstone sculptures and traditional water puppets repurposed as ornamental displays.
Each walled and gated villa, with clay-tiled roof and wood-raftered ceiling, is supremely private and roomy, with a window-walled bathroom, terrace for private dining, lounging pavilion beside the pool, glass-sided spa and gardens.
Saffron, in a pitch-roofed pavilion on a forested hill with sea views, is the standout dining option. Served here is Thai food, banquet-style, finessed by a clever Bangkok chef. Do not miss a salad of banana blossom and prawns to start or dessert of coconut creme brulee with ginger syrup.
Lang Co is situated in Central Vietnam, roughly equidistant between Hue and Hoi An. The nearest airport is Danang. It is an attractive island-like stretch of palm-shaded white sand, with a crystal-clear, turquoise lagoon on one side and 6 miles (10km) of beachfront on the other. If the weather is nice the ocean is certainly inviting. High season is April to July. From late August till November rains are frequent, and from December to March it can get chilly.
