Hotel Tayka del Desierto
The setting for this hotel is arguably the most incredible in Bolivia and it is really this location, at altitude in the Uyuni salt desert, more than the property itself that is so inspiring.
This remote accommodation was built as a community project by four local families, with a capacity for 47 guests in basic but comfortable rooms. This simple hotel is very much in tune with its environment, blending into a sublime landscape near the lagoons and flamingos. Look up into a night sky filled with a breathtaking array of stars.
There are solar panels on the roof that generate electricity and hot water in the evenings.
Bolivia boasts the largest salt lake in the world – Salar de Uyuni – and you can easily reach it by bus or short flight from La Paz. There are lagoons dotted with pink flamingos, weird rocks and geysers and a choice of touring options – mostly via 4×4 vehicles.
