Lake Taupo Lodge
The former home of the owners, they turned it into an architectural wonder to welcome guests to in 1996. The design is completely organic, inspired by the vision of Frank Lloyd Wright. Lake, mountain and garden views stream in through the huge windows, and the sense of well being and harmony is palpable.
Taupo is a charming lakeside town, reached within a few hours from Rotorua and the Hawke’s Bay region; perfect for a laid-back few days after some serious wine touring. Lake Taupo is ripe for fishing and water skiing and there are small thermal pools to discover.
It’s a good base from which to explore, including the Tongariro and Ruapehu area, where parts of the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed. Ruapehu is New Zealand’s largest ski mountain, but the weather is unreliable. The Tongariro Crossing is regarded by many as the finest one day hike in the world; it truly is epic.
