Onguma Plains Camp aka The Fort
Located on the private Onguma Reserve, near the eastern entrance gate of Etosha National Park, Onguma – The Fort (also known as Onguma Plains Camp) is Onguma’s flagship property and is a fabulous luxurious base from which to explore Etosha National Park. Although it shares the reserve with its sister properties, including Onguma Bush Camp and Onguma Tented Camp, it is entirely totally private.
It is built in exactly the right spot to give you one of the best sunset views in the whole of Namibia – overlooking the beautiful ruggedness of the Etosha Pans, decorated only with its wild animals and hundreds of Camel Thorn trees. Moroccan style architecture is enveloped with natural Namibian textures and accented with bright colors and fabrics.
You get the feeling that you are on the edge of civilization as you enjoy your drink overlooking the expanse of Fischer’s Pan in the distance. There is every chance that there will be a lion or other predator drinking from the waterhole just beyond the main lodge.
The 13 suites, luxuriously and uniquely appointed, all face out towards the Etosha landscape and are completely private, with large decks and outdoor showers. The staff are delightful and dinner out on the main deck, under the stars, is an incredible experience.
A National Park since 1907, Etosha has some 144 mammal species, 340 types of bird and 110 different reptiles. Come between the months of May and September for some of the best game viewing in Africa, retiring to one of the luxury camps that now pepper the vast plains.
