Serena Beach Hotel and Spa
Set right on Shanzu Beach, it’s just a quick hop across the sands to the ocean waves. The hotel has bougainvillea flowers blooming in the grounds, with a set of refurbished rooms called The Village. It also serves up what is held to be the freshest breakfasts in town.
In terms of its ecological ‘foot’ print, the hotel abides by a code of responsible practice in relation to: energy conservation (inverter systems have recently been installed so as to reduce the hotel’s use of diesel-fuelled generators), waste recycling (glass, plastics, ‘wet waste’ and the distribution of food-waste to local pig-farmers), sewage disposal, air emissions, non-CFC use, pesticide-use, noise reduction and visual pollution.
Wherever possible, local produce is featured on the menus.
Mombasa is an island that touts African, Middle Eastern and Asian influences, with mosques alongside churches on the streets. The Old Town and Fort Jesus are the main sightseeing spots in the city, while more upmarket, quieter Diani Beach attracts local sun worshipers and has a wealth of restaurants and bars.
