The Turbine Hotel and Spa was an ambitious project which transformed the old Knysna power station into a boutique hotel – the result is a quirky wow factor hotel! Some of the rooms are not huge, but they are of acceptable size. The Turbine Hotel is surrounded by water on three sides and comprises 24 individually themed rooms, along with a spa, cafe restaurant and tapas bar.
Kayaking and boating is available on the Knysna lagoon, and inland are excellent hikes and mountain biking trails through the forests. Whale watching can be done in season, and dolphins are regularly spotted. There is also a pool overlooking the water, and an excellent playground just across the road, which faces on to two great restaurants (pizza and tapas) so you can eat whilst keeping an eye on the kids.
Knysna Elephant Sanctuary is within easy reach, which cares for orphaned elephants, and where you can feed, touch and walk with these gentle giants.
The woodlands, rocky hills and waterways of this region make it a must-do drive for visitors. There are any number of charming villages to stop off at and sample the local produce. See especially the Wilderness National Parks Lake District and the lagoons around Knysna.
