Renovate a clubroom for the Boys and Girls Club
The Boys and Girls Club of Hawaii (“BGCH”) clubhouse in Kapaa, on Kauai Island needs extension and much renovation.
On Kauai, BGCH serves more than 300 children per day and over 1,200 youth per year.
Kapaa Clubhouse and Waimea Outreach serves youth who reside in “disadvantaged neighborhoods”. Unfortunately, more than half of those residents are Native Hawaiian.
According to the 2010 Kauai County Consolidated Plan, public services are needed in HIGH risk communities. More than 30% of teens on Kauai live below the federal poverty level, 40% receive free or reduced lunches at public high schools and 11% of teens are not in school or working. The result is a loss of hope in young adults.
Numerous studies show an increase in prevention activities will result in less crime, reduced substance abuse, increased number of days that children attend school and family reunification.
Kapaa Clubhouse-The Kapaa Clubhouse opened in 1993 after category 5 Hurricane devastated Kauai. Children needed a place to go and play while their parents put their homes back together. Kapaa Clubhouse is a shell of a building that is in desperate need of renovation. The Club does not have indoor plumbing and as a result uses portable bathrooms located outside the facility.
Kapaa serves 80 youth per day in afterschool programming and is located on the same property as Kapaa High School and Kapaa Elementary School ensuring safety and cooperation between the grade levels. Intercession programs are day long activities during school breaks.
The Torch Club is a program catered to middle school aged children with an emphasis on drug, alcohol and tobacco prevention where the older teen youth participate in Leaders-in-Training which is specialized in providing community service, researching and visiting post-secondary education resources and career development. As part of the daily curriculum all students participate in Power Hour.
Power Hour is a home work and tutoring assistance program. After their homework is complete they have a choice of break-out sessions incorporating enrichment activities.
The intention for Kapaa Clubhouse is to use the shell of the building they have now and extend the front and back of the building approximately 30 feet each way, to create a designated teen center, add a restroom, make improvements inside the building, fix electrical and drainage issues, grate/pave the front driveway and add rain gutters.
Also, planned in the renovation project is adding a kitchen to prepare food and allow the community to rent the space for functions. This will add a new revenue source.
This project will increase the Club’s capabilities to serve the youth, reduce the pressure on the budget by removing the portable toilet monthly fees and increase awareness and commitment of neighbors. Their goal is to inspire children to be responsible citizens but by doing so they need responsible mentors.
BGCH provides a safe, structured and positive environment for young people after school, during holidays and on summer vacation.
Their mission is to inspire young people to become responsible citizens. They accomplish this by providing:
– A safe place to learn and grow
– Ongoing relationships with caring, adult professionals
– Life-enhancing programs and character development experiences
– Hope and opportunity
You can make a difference.
Accommodation in Kauai Island
The scenery here is somewhat more dramatic than the other islands, with vast caverns and chasms surrounded by typically scenic beaches. There are several small and charming historic towns to discover on day trips. Be sure to spend time at Poipu Beach and Hanalei Bay.
