Teach in India
Your family can teach or be a reading partner in an inspiring school in a Delhi slum, which is doing incredible work giving children a real education
About this project
Since 2000, what began as a small effort to teach spoken English to 40 children with a handful of volunteers has grown into a full-fledged after-school support initiative, born out of necessity as demand grew and classrooms sprang up wherever space could be found — parks, pavements, tents, and borrowed corners — because no child was ever turned away, especially given that many came from underprivileged homes with illiterate parents unable to support their education and at risk of dropping out.
Today, that same commitment has expanded into four after-school support centres reaching over 1,200 children and 300 women, creating local job opportunities along the way, all while working to close the education gap for underprivileged children through programmes that nurture not just academics but life skills and all-round development in a child-friendly environment.
Main volunteering activities:
- Being a reading partner
- Teaching in any areas of expertise, such as math, IT, or English
- Playing games and dancing with the children
- Options also to assist with repairs and renovations
Key information:
- Time commitment: Families typically spend 2 to 4 days giving back at this project
- Daily hours: Sessions typically run from 9am to 3pm
- Best months to visit: This project welcomes visitors year-round. For the most comfortable weather, the dry season from November through April is ideal
- Family friendly: Yes. Younger family members can connect easily and immediately with the children there.
- Minimum age for children: We recommend this project for families with children aged 8 and above.
Successes to date:
The four after-school support centers now reach more than 1,200 children and 300 women, while also generating employment for people within the local community.
These centers exist to close the education gap for underprivileged children and help them achieve stronger learning outcomes.
And the programmes don’t stop at academics — they also focus on building life skills and supporting each child’s overall development in a warm, child-friendly environment.
