The Trip That Changed Everything: How Volunteering in Belize Brought Our Family Closer

Family building an eco-friendly stove in a Belize village during a Hands Up Holidays service trip

It was supposed to be just another family vacation —sightseeing, relaxing, maybe a little adventure. But what we experienced in Belize was far more powerful than we ever imagined.

Our family—two busy parents and two teenagers glued to their devices—needed a reset. Between school, sports, work, and endless scrolling, we felt like we were living side by side, not together. We longed for something that would reconnect us and allow us to unplug—and that’s where Hands Up Holidays came in.

From the very first consultation, the team listened to what we wanted: luxury, culture, and something meaningful. They crafted a trip to Belize that combined boutique luxury hotels,  chocolate-making workshops, the Belize Barrier Reef —and two days of volunteering to build an eco-stove for a local family.

The moment we arrived in Placencia, we were enchanted. The village, the colors, the warmth of the people—it was magical, especially the helicopter flight we took over the Blue Hole.

But it wasn’t until we met the family we’d be helping that everything shifted.

The mother, Maria, welcomed us into her small home with open arms and genuine smiles. She explained that without an eco-stove, she had to cook over an open flame indoors, which filled the room with smoke and endangered her and her children’s health.

The next two days were spent digging, laying bricks, and working under the careful supervision of the local experts. Our boys, ages 12 and 14, surprised us. They asked questions, got their hands dirty, and connected with Maria’s kids through games and gestures that transcended language….and of course the universal language of soccer!

In the evenings, we’d return to our stunning hotel, It’zana, where we’d relax with a massage or take a dip in the pool. The luxury wasn’t lost on us—but the contrast between our comfort and Maria’s reality sparked incredible conversations.

Our sons began to ask questions like, “Why don’t all families have stoves?”, “Can we do more volunteering in Belize?”, and “How can we help more people like Maria?” That alone was worth the trip.

We left Belize with more than memories. We returned with a deeper appreciation for each other, a stronger sense of purpose, and the realization that luxury and impact don’t have to be mutually exclusive.
