Here are a few steps you can take to make sure you find a volunteer project that allows you to help, feel good and make a real impact in the world!
REFLECT AND KNOW YOUR PURPOSE
Maybe you want get some hands-on experience in social work or cultural immersion. Or perhaps you’re concerned about a world issue and you’re just excited to get your hands dirty and start working. Reflect on these.Understanding your motivations will direct you to the right types of opportunities and organizations.
DETERMINE WHAT IS IT YOU WANT TO GIVE
Determining what you want to give and asking yourself what you want to get out of it, will allow you to gauge whether or not you will be a great fit to the project and the community.
ASK YOURSELF WHAT YOU CAN COMMIT
Be realistic with how much time you can commit. We often have a flood of excitement about volunteering that might lead us to over-commit. If you’ve never really volunteered before, you can always take a small, short term volunteer project and once you get the hang of it, you can get more involved later. This is better than starting it big and back out later on, leaving the organization hanging.
When you travel with Hands Up Holidays, you can experience a short term voluntourism project and combine it with customized sightseeing activities, all in sustainable eco-luxury.
FIND WHAT’S AVAILABLE FOR YOU
Go around and see what types of volunteer opportunities are available. Do a lot of research first to find what’s available, what fits you and how does it work. Ask yourself, what speaks to your heart and why?
LASTLY, ASK YOURSELF, “AM I READY?”
Ask other people about their experiences volunteering, their reason and motivation to volunteer… where? How long? What made it work for them? What made it worthwhile?
